Make Dishwashing More FUN (it’s possible!)

To quote the wise Mary Poppins, “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun.” Our dishwasher hasn’t been working well the last couple months so we have been hand washing. This definitely has made me a little less excited to do the dishes lately. (Let’s be honest, I’m never really excited to do the dishes, lol!) But the way I see it, if I’m going to do something, I might as well enjoy myself in the process. Even when it comes to dishwashing!

So here are a couple ways I try and make doing the dishes more fun!

1. Periscope

This is my favorite thing to watch while I’m doing the dishes. I just prop my phone up so I can see it in front of my sink and wash away. My favorite scopes to watch are by Stacy over at Humorous Homemaking. She makes me laugh and I have learned a lot from her in regards to homemaking. Because she talks mostly on the topic of the home, I am always encouraged to put more effort into my home while watching and then I find myself enjoying doing the dishes and looking at it as a joy rather than a chore. I also enjoy scopes from Crystal Paine, the Money Saving Mom.

2. Set a Timer

I love setting the timer for tasks. When I set the timer I can pretty much talk myself into doing any task because I know it HAS to end by a certain time. Usually I will set the timer for around 15-20 minutes and then I tell myself that even if I am not done in that time, I can still stop whenever the timer goes off. Usually this just gets me working and when the timer goes off, I’m so into the task and motivated to finish that I just keep going until its complete. I also feel like the timer encourages me to work more quickly.

3. Light a candle

Candles are magical I tell you. What is it about them that just calms us and makes us feel all cozy inside? I don’t know but I love them. I got this mason jar candle wax warmer from Kirklands home store for our kitchen and I love it. Recently Walmart had a sale on their candle wax melts for .50 cents each. Amazing! I think they are normally $2 each so that’s a steal of a deal. I also like to buy candles at the Dollar Tree. They last just as long as glade brands which I like as well but are just a lot cheaper. We go through candles pretty quickly around here so I like to see when I can get deals on them. Candles just set such a nice tone in the house and I love how they smell. They make the job of dishwashing such a better experience.

So those are my tricks for making the dishes more fun. Do you have ways that you bring more fun into household tasks? I would love to hear them!

Happy dishwashing!

Chrissy
