Shop your home

May 29, 2015

Hi Friends! I hope you all had a lovely Memorial Day weekend. I’m back today with a fun idea that all of us can enjoy, no matter your budget. What’s that you might ask?

Shop your home! Whether you are a shopper at heart or not, I would bet most us all want our homes to look nice and be functioning well. We usually have about a million ideas of all the things we would like to either update in our home or things we’ve seen in stores that would work just perfectly with what we already have. The problem? Sometimes the budget just doesn’t allow for that new furniture piece you want or those old picture frames you’d like to replace.

I have been shopping my home since my husband and I first got married and it is one of my favorite things to do. A lot of times what we are looking for is already in our home, right under our noses! (or under all that paperwork in the office closet, not speaking from experience of course ;)

So what do I mean when I say shop your home? I mean exactly that, go shopping in your house! You can even take a little bag or basket around with you if you like :) Sometimes it just takes some fresh eyes to see the potential in those unlovely items around the house. Some of my favorite ways to use items shopped for in my home?

Nothing excites me more than bringing new purpose to something not being used to it’s full potential. An example of that from our home would be the white shelving unit pictured above. For years we were using it as toy storage in my son’s room. At the same time, for years we have been talking about needing a bookcase downstairs. Then a couple weeks ago it hit me, does my son really need all that storage? Not really. So we used a large basket for his toys and brought the shelving unit downstairs. Problem solved :)

Sometimes a coat of paint can transform items you own and make them more your current style. In the photo above is a little wooden tray I bought at Target years ago. It was black originally and I loved the finish when I bought it. As time went on, it wasn’t really fitting in with the other things in my home and I ended up storing it in a closet upstairs for a long time. One day when I was looking for something to hold some coffee/tea items in my kitchen, I was reunited with this little tray. A quick spray paint of gold and I was in love! Such a cheap and easy solution.

Sometimes we have pieces in our house that just plain need help. They aren’t serving any purpose and they aren’t pretty either. That’s when you have a choice to make. You can toss it, give it away or repurpose and refinish! Guess my favorite option? ;) That’s what we did with this piece and I’m so glad we did! After the makeover we placed it under the TV for DVD storage. Now it’s lovely and functional! Win win.

Sure, it’s fun to buy new things but it can sometimes be even more fun to bring life to what you already have! Maybe take some time this weekend to look around and see what’s in your home. You might be surprised at the treasures you find :) Do you like to shop your home? I’d love to hear about your at-home shopping adventures!

Xo,

Chrissy

I plan to do this next week when my daughter is out of school already. I’m not very creative, and even though she is 7 (lol) , I believe our combined forces will work better. So thank you again Chrissy! !!
